Yogyakarta, 21 April 2025   Kontributor: Yanuar Nugroho

Selamat Jalan Paus Fransiskus

Growing in True Love

Serving marginalized children with Realino Learning Community (KBR) in Jombor and Bongsuwung is a vocation that embodies Christian values. This service mirrors Jesus’ presence with the marginalized, echoing Matthew 25:40. “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” It reinforces the notion that in serving marginalized communities, we encounter Christ himself. Engaging with these children has opened my heart to the realities of injustice, encompassing the spirit of acceptance as a SCJ religious brother rooted in the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This experience urged me to share God’s love indiscriminately across cultural divides. Through my interactions at Realino Learning Community, I discovered that service is not just about giving; it’s also about receiving. I learned resilience and hope from the children, recognizing each individual’s inherent dignity as a creation of God rather than judging based on appearance or status. This social outreach has mirrored Jesus’ call to pursue justice, embody love, and foster hope. Moreover, it has reminded me of a larger purpose: to extend God’s love in the world. The essence of social service is to love unconditionally, selflessly striving for the dignity and joy of others. By dedicating my time and compassion, I participate in Christ’s mission, illuminating the lives of those in need and embracing a deeper commitment to serve and transform both the community and myself.   Contributor: Fr. “Going Home”

The year 2024 was a truly valuable journey for me. I returned to a place full of memories, a place that gave me knowledge and shaped me into who I am today. However, now I come with a different role. I never imagined that I could return to this place, especially as a teacher candidate. It feels strange to be in the same school, meeting the teachers that I used to call Sir and Ma’am. Now, they address me Ma’am, not just calling my nickname. YPPK Adhi Luhur Senior Secondary School, also known as Kolese Le Cocq d’Armandville, is the name of the institution. When I was a student, this school accepted all students without any discrimination. I never felt alienated from my friends despite my differences. This experience shaped my pride in the school that provides academic excellence and instills the values of tolerance and respect for others. Doubts and Questions Of course, the journey to study at this school was not easy. My family and I faced many questions and doubts from the community. As a Muslim who chose to attend a Catholic school, people often pose questions like “Are you ready to attend a Catholic school? Do you know the rules? Are you ready to take off your hijab? Are you ready to be isolated?” Although many people doubted my decision, I am grateful to have parents and older siblings who uphold the value of diversity. They fully supported my choice and convinced me that whatever other people said was just an opinion that was not necessarily true. To find out, I had to take that path with full confidence. Their messages stuck in my heart and guided me to step forward without hesitation. My decision was right. Belief Becomes Reality While studying at this Jesuit College, I was always treated fairly and had the same rights as my other friends. I was able to participate in various academic and non-academic activities without discrimination. The priests, brothers, sisters, teachers, educational staff, the janitor Mr. Argo, and all friends always showed mutual respect and appreciation. I was never forced to change my beliefs. Even though I took Catholic religious lessons, I was never forced to pray in a way that was different from my beliefs. In fact, at this school, I learned about the values of tolerance and openness to differences.   Getting to Know Catholicism Through this school, I began to understand the concepts of Catholicism, such as Mass, communion, altar, etc. I also learned to read the Bible. I participated in teaching Sunday school. Those never aim to alter my beliefs but contributed to my understanding of other religions. I am grateful because my insight is enriched, and my way of thinking is broadened. This school does not focus on a particular religious doctrine but emphasizes love, respect, and appreciation. One of the things I learned from this school is the values of the 4Cs: competence, compassion, conscience, and commitment. Through these values, I learned that education is both developing academic intelligence and humanizing others.   Teaching Assistance From July to December 2024, I returned to YPPK Adhi Luhur Senior Secondary School as part of my campus program, Teaching Assistance. This program provides opportunities for students to become teaching assistants at colleges or high schools. It aims to improve students’ teaching skills, enrich academic experiences, and assist lecturers or teachers in the learning process. If I went to school as a student without a hijab in the past, now I come with a different appearance, wearing a hijab. However, they welcomed me just the same as when I was a student, full of warmth, love, and tolerance. I was also allowed and trusted to teach in all grade X classes, assist in extracurricular activities, assist school event committees, and meet extraordinary students. Maintained Values One of the students who caught my attention was Asyaidah, the only Muslim student in her class, just like me. I observed her and saw that her treatment was the same as mine while studying here. The incident proves that the spirit of tolerance at this Jesuit College in the far east of Indonesia has been maintained from generation to generation. In my journey of learning as a teacher candidate, I have not only learned from the Fathers, Brothers, and teachers, but also from students who have an extraordinary spirit in learning. They do not give up easily when facing difficulties and strongly believe in helping and supporting each other. From them, I learned that a teacher does teach and continues to learn from different teachers and their students. Growing The teaching assistance program was almost over in mid-December, so I gained a lot from this experience. This school has helped me grow, develop, and provide a better future. More than that, I found the meaning of strength because I have had the principle of growing without letting sadness control me all this time. It sounds odd, but my family shouldn’t have accepted that experience based on my parents’ and older siblings’ experiences. That is what shaped me into a person who must always be strong, even tending to suppress feelings and constantly trying to avoid sadness. However, my experience at this school taught me that being strong does not mean rejecting sadness. This is because sadness is not a negative emotion but rather a way to express our affection to other people. I also learned that being human means allowing ourselves to feel, appreciate, and be grateful for every experience we have. This school has become an important part of my life, not only as a place to obtain knowledge but also as a second home that teaches the values of life. I am grateful to have been part of YPPK Adhi Luhur Senior Secondary School, Le Cocq d’Armandville College. I will always carry this valuable lesson wherever I set foot.   Contributor: Mutiara Al Kausar – Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta Student

Gumregah lan Jumangkah Mbangun Paseduluran

KANISIUS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL OF TLOGOSARI KULON HOLDS BREAK-FASTING: This year is special as Muslims and Catholics conduct the fasting moment together. For Muslims, the month of Ramadan is a holy month to do fasting and commemorate the first revelation given to the Prophet Muhammad. Meanwhile, for Catholics, fasting during Lent is a form of repentance, regret for sins, and emulating the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. The theme of 2025 APP (Solidarity Action) of the Archdiocese of Semarang is Fellowship in Prayer, Repentance, and Hope. We hope that everyone will experience both physical and social repentance during the fasting and abstinence period. This expectation is in line with the Pastoral Letter as stated on the Archdiocese of Semarang Basic Directions of 2021-2025 and the Directions for the Implementation of Abiding in Christ and Bearing Fruit: Be More Catholic and More Apostolic in the Midst of Changes in the Society. This hope of the Church is what activates our brains. What can we do in the educational community of Tlogosari Kulon Elementary School to interpret repentance during the Lent, which coincides with the month of Ramadan? We finally agreed to hold an activity with community residents in Tlogosari Kulon Village where our school is situated. This activity was held on Thursday, March 20, 2025, in the hall of Tlogosari Kulon Elementary School and it became a step to maintain brotherhood between religious communities. We raised the theme: Gumregah lan Jumangkah mBangun Paseduluran (rising and stepping to build strong brotherhood bond) and to live the spirit of men and women for and with others.   Teachers and students collaborated to welcome and serve the guests enthusiastically. The students helped the teachers provide dishes for guests who would break their fast with fresh drinks and snacks. This event was held thanks to the willingness of the donors and support from the Societal Commission and the Committee of Solidarity Actions of the Vicariate of Semarang.   In this occasion, we invited Gus Muhammad Abdul Qodir, Lc., M.A., as a speaker. In addition, there was special performances by Rebana Cinta Damai (peace percussions), Sufi dance, and other performances by students of Kanisius Schools of Tlogosari Kulon. “Maintaining brotherhood between religious communities is important because it reflects a form of social piety amid Indonesian society. We hope that Ramadan will catalyze improvement. Do not be oppressive and egoistic,” said Gus Qodir. Of the 350 people who were invited, around 187 were present at this event. This is an impressive achievement for a first-time event. All the guests expressed their appreciation and hope that this activity can positively impact the relationship of diverse backgrounds in the community. We hope this activity will be a good step as a Christian school in maintaining harmony in the predominant Islamic community.   Kanisius schools are unique in their education, namely, as they use the Reflective Pedagogy Paradigm in their learning activities. The culture of finding the depth of an event through reflection is evident from the results of the teachers’ evaluation on Saturday, March 22, 2025, and the writings of several students who attended the event. Our event was good and went smoothly. We need to be more proactive and offer friendly greetings to the people around us. One of the teachers introduced the concept of Gumregah lan Jumangkah Mbangun Paseduluran to the invitees. Several students also wrote a little reflection on this event. “I am proud to be part of Kanisius Elementary School of Tlogosari Kulon, which held an interfaith event. The occasion is a new experience for me because I can learn about Islam, know Sufi dance, and understand more about interfaith relationship,” said Sharbel. “When I hand the snacks, I felt pleased because the residents accepted and enjoyed both the snacks and the event. I am happy to be able to make them happy,” said Nio. “This is the first event to me and I was a bit embarrassed to greet the guests. Yet, over time, I started to get used to it. I greeted the performers and they were cool. When I distributed the snacks, I saw the residents enjoying it. I was happy, and this activity was an unforgettable experience,” said Chilla.   Contributor: Khatarina Ika Wardhani, S.Psi.- Headmaster of Kanisius Grade School Tlogosari Kulon

Finding God Through the Lens

Canon Community Goes To Paroki Bongsari: OMK (Catholic Youth Organization) of Bongsari Parish, in collaboration with Canon Indonesia, successfully held an event at the Grha Argya Ballroom of the Church of Santa Theresia of Bongsari Parish on Sunday, March 9, 2025. The event, themed Finding God Through the Lens, was attended by around 70 participants aged 10 to 70. They came from various parishes in Semarang and outside the city of Semarang. This phenomenon shows high enthusiasm for the world of photography and how this art can be a means of reflecting faith.   Finding God Through Photography Since 08.00 in the morning, participants have gathered enthusiastically to dive deeper into the world of photography. This event presents two professional speakers, Misbachul Munir and Angelie Ivone, who shared their knowledge and experience in photography. Misbachul Munir discusses basic photography techniques, from understanding lighting and composition to the correct camera settings to capture quality images. Meanwhile, Angelie Ivone guides participants in understanding photography to capture the beauty and presence of God in everyday life. Through the concept of Finding God Through the Lens, participants are invited to see that every moment, the beauty of nature, and human expression are reflections of God’s love that can be captured through a camera. Both children and elderly participants found new perspectives in observing the world through a camera lens. From Theory to Practice: Capturing Moments with Meaning In addition to the theory session, participants were invited to practice the techniques they had learned directly. In this session, they were given photography challenges that emphasized technical aspects and encouraged them to capture images with spiritual meaning. Interestingly, the various generations present at this event provided unique perspectives in capturing moments. Children tried to capture the world with their joy, young people emphasized artistic expression, while more senior participants took many pictures that reflected their life experiences and spirituality. Support from Canon Indonesia and Datascript As the main organizers, Canon Indonesia and Datascript also presented various photographic devices that participants could try directly. They also provided insight into the latest camera technology developments and how to utilize available features to support optimal photo results. Reflection and Hope for the Future The event, which lasted until 4:00 p.m., was closed with a question-and-answer session and the awarding of certificates to participants. Many expressed their gratitude for the learning opportunity and hoped that similar events could be held again. It is hoped that the Church community will be better able to document every important moment in church life. More than just technical skills, Finding God Through the Lens reflects that photography can be a powerful means of evangelization and communication of faith. The Church of Santa Theresia of Bongsari would like to thank Canon Indonesia and Datascript for their support and collaboration. May the spirit of learning and cooperation continue growing, bringing light to many people through photography.   Contributor: Bonaventura Satria Hagi Putra – Committee

Celebrating and Advancing the Role of Women in the Society of Jesus

This year marks a significant moment of reflection and commitment within the Society of Jesus. As the Society commemorates the 30th anniversary of Decree 14 of General Congregation 34 (1995); emphasizing that women’s participation is central to the integration of faith and justice; and the world remembers the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action adopted by the UN Fourth World Conference on Women, the theme of this International Women’s Day, “Accelerating Action”, resonates deeply with the voices of women who have shaped the Society’s journey with hope and urgency.   Women in the Ignatian Tradition For centuries, the Ignatian tradition has honoured the wisdom, faith, and strength of women. The Society especially recognizes Mary, the Mother of Jesus, whose Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55) exemplifies God’s transformative grace. Women have played integral roles in education, formation, apostolic works, and leadership, offering insights rooted in deep encounters with the Gospel. Their presence has shaped the Society of Jesus, mirroring Mary’s openness and responsive love. This history invites the Society to reimagine structures and practices for a more inclusive future.   Women’s contributions within the Jesuit tradition are not supplementary; they are foundational. Whether serving as educators, administrators, spiritual companions or leaders, or in support roles, their work is vital to fostering a mission that is both transformative and deeply rooted in justice. Their stories of faith, resilience, sensitivity and service mirror the path of Mary; one of contemplation, courage, and decisive action. This history calls for recognition of the necessity of their participation in shaping the Church’s and the Society’s future.   Synodality and Women’s Voices A truly synodal Church requires the authentic voices of women to be heard and integrated into collective discernment. In 2021, Father General Arturo Sosa, SJ, established the Commission on the Role and Responsibilities of Women in the Society of Jesus to ensure that women’s voices are more deeply engaged in shaping Jesuit mission. With six lay women, one religious sister, one lay man and five Jesuits, it has worked to assess the implementation of Decree 14. One of its most significant initiatives was a global survey conducted in 2023, reaching approximately 1,400 collaborators. Following the survey’s completion, a qualitative phase was conducted, involving in-depth individual and group interviews with lay women, lay men, religious sisters, and Jesuits, as well as focus group discussions. All participants had prior experience with the Society and its programs, whether as employees or volunteers. It convened in Rome last November for analysis and spiritual conversation toward fulling our mandates, including discernment of recommendations. The final report is nearing completion and will be presented to Father General in the third quarter 2025.   Women’s Leadership in the Society of Jesus Ignatian spirituality thrives on the dynamic interplay between contemplation and action. Women have embodied this balance, leading initiatives in education, formation, and outreach. Their contributions continue to illuminate paths of innovative and compassionate ministry. Their leadership, service and proposals are not just a call for inclusion but a catalyst for transformative mission. Women in Jesuit institutions have led efforts in theological reflection, social justice advocacy, and pastoral care. From academic institutions to grassroots community movements, their leadership demonstrates a commitment to faith and justice that is at the core of Ignatian spirituality. Their ability to nurture and guide communities has helped policies and structures that better serve the marginalized.   A Call for Discernment and Collaboration As the Commission nears completion, we encourage continued engagement in deep reflection. The inclusion of women is not just about justice – it is about enriching the entire mission of The Society. Their voices, perspectives, and leadership are integral to discerning how best to serve today’s world. Looking ahead, the work of the Commission highlights the importance of creating systems that empower women within the Society. By acknowledging their unique experiences and the transformative power they bring to ministry, education, and social justice, the Society of Jesus moves closer to fulfilling its call to justice, reconciliation, and shared mission.   Listening to the Spirit’s Invitation and Call to Ongoing Discernment As the Society of Jesus continues to advance its commitment to justice and reconciliation, the full participation of women remains essential to its mission. The work of the Commission reminds us that inclusion is not just about representation but about recognizing the transformative power of diverse voices in shaping a Church and society rooted in faith and justice. The call to action is clear: to listen, to discern, and to respond with courage.   Reflection As we reflect on this call and on the role of women in the Church and the Society, the Commission invites you to turn to Scripture as a source of inspiration and guidance. May these passages help us discern how Christ is inviting each of us to participate in this shared mission, and may we all seek the wisdom to recognize Christ’s presence in our shared journey and respond with faith, humility, hope and courage.   Prayerfully invite the Lord to help you examine your thoughts, emotions, and responses regarding the role of women in the world, the Church, and particularly within the Society of Jesus using any of the following, individually and/or together:   1. The Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55) – Mary’s song of justice, hope, and empowerment. 2. The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:1-7) – A call to transformation and the values of God’s kingdom. 3. The Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35) – Recognizing Christ’s presence in our journey of discernment. 4. The Samaritan Woman at the Well (John 4:1-42) – An encounter that leads to transformation and mission. 5. The Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12) – The invitation to a life of humility, mercy, and justice. 6. The Healing of the Bent-Over Woman (Luke 13:10-17) – Jesus’ recognition and affirmation of women’s dignity. 7. The Calling of the Disciples (Matthew 4:18-22) – Leaving everything behind to follow Christ’s mission. 8. The Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20) – The call to spread the Gospel and make disciples of all nations.

Encounter as “the Way of the Heart”

The Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network (PWPN) in Indonesia recently celebrated a significant event: the visit of its International Director, Fr. Cristóbal Fones, SJ, in February 2025. This visit aimed to understand the local context of Indonesia, to explore how the apostolate is carried out, and to identify both challenges and opportunities for growth. Fr. Cristóbal, a Chilean Jesuit who officially assumed his role as International Director on January 1, 2025, also visited Malaysia, Singapore, and Timor-Leste during his Asia-Pacific tour. His visit to Indonesia, from February 22 to 27, 2025, was packed with meaningful activities. In Jakarta, he visited the Cathedral Church, Terowongan Silaturahim (Tunnel of Friendship) which was inaugurated by Pope Francis last year, and the Istiqlal Mosque. He also concelebrated Mass at the Cathedral. The following day, he participated in a public seminar on The Way of the Heart with Fr. Sindhunata, SJ, which brought together various Ignatian spirituality communities such as Magis, Christian Life Community (CLC), First Spiritual Exercises (FSE), Schooled by Spirit (SBS), and Aminigo. Fr. Cristóbal also introduced PWPN to students at Canisius College. In Yogyakarta, he met with Fr. Antonius Sumarwan, SJ, the National Coordinator of PWPN Indonesia. There, he visited Pusat Musik Liturgi (Center for Liturgical Music), the office of Yayasan Basis which publishes the official PWPN magazines Utusan (the Messenger), and Omah Petroek which provides several sites for reflecting the way or the heart. PWPN Indonesia also organized a Mass and a song parade at St. Antonius Padua Church. The journey continued to Central Java, where Fr. Cristóbal visited Mertoyudan Minor Seminary and attended the first Mass of Fr. Petrik Yoga, Pr, an active member of PWPN Indonesia. In Wonosobo, he was treated to an exceptional dance performance by students from SLB/B (school for students with special needs) Dena Upakara, accompanied by the Sisters of PMY. The visit concluded with a trip to the Borobudur Temple. Throughout his visit, Fr. Cristóbal shared the essence of PWPN, its spiritual foundation, and its mission. Here are some key highlights. Friendship with Jesus At the heart of PWPN’s mission is a personal friendship with Jesus. Rooted in the spirituality of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, PWPN unites over 22 million Catholics across more than 90 countries. This spirituality is introduced through The Way of the Heart, a formation module consisting of nine steps of reflection that help participants understand the Hearts of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This module serves as a guide to cultivating a heart capable of embracing a mission of compassion for the world. Since 2023, PWPN Indonesia has adapted The Way of the Heart as an annual retreat module. In celebration of the Jubilee of the Sacred Heart, PWPN Indonesia also used this module as the theme for its prayer booklet and as a year-long reflection resource. Monthly online spiritual exercises and conversations are held on the second Monday of each month. Fr. Cristóbal not only speaks about friendship with Jesus but also lives it deeply. During discussions with students at Kolese Kanisius and Mertoyudan Minor Seminary, he shared that Jesus is his closest friend. He revealed that as a teenager, he often wrote letters to Jesus, and even now, Jesus remains his best friend.   The Apostolate of Prayer One of PWPN’s primary missions is to pray for and spread the Pope’s monthly prayer intentions. The International PWPN team promotes this through The Pope Video and the Click to Pray app, which provides morning, midday, and evening prayers to support the Pope’s intentions. PWPN Indonesia actively supports these initiatives by collaborating with the National Office for Pontifical Missions (BN-KKI) to translate The Pope Video subtitles and infographics into Indonesian. Materials from Click to Pray are also regularly translated and shared on social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. During Fr. Cristóbal’s visit, PWPN Indonesia organized a song parade, “Prayer Songs for the World” after the daily Mass at St. Antonius Padua Kotabaru Church. Singing, often considered “praying twice,” helped the congregation better understand PWPN’s spirituality and mission. The event featured the “Daily Offering Prayer” song in Indonesian and English, composed by Damian Alma. Fr. Cristóbal also emphasized the role of music in evangelization. With the motto, “Music as a service of faith and promotion of justice,” he has released 12 albums. Despite his musical talents, he humbly stated, “I am not a musician or a singer; I am simply a priest.” For him, music is a form of apostolate and service. Formation of the Youth PWPN is deeply committed to the formation and accompaniment of young people. Its youth community, the Eucharistic Youth Movement (EYM), is coordinated in Indonesia by Fr. John Nugroho, SJ. Inspired by the pedagogy of the Emmaus disciples, EYM focuses on the Gospel, the Eucharist, and Mission, inviting young people aged 5 to 25 to live like Jesus in a heart-to-heart friendship with Him.   During his visit, Fr. Cristóbal introduced EYM to students at Canisius College and Mertoyudan Minor Seminary. The students enthusiastically engaged with him, asking questions about faith, vocation, PWPN’s mission, and how he integrates music into his ministry. Fr. Cristóbal also had the opportunity to meet students from SLB/B Dena Upakara in Wonosobo, a school for children with hearing impairments. The students joyfully performed three dances, leaving a profound impression on Fr. Cristóbal. He emphasized that these children deserve our attention and care, highlighting the importance of inclusive ministry. A New Spirit for PWPN Indonesia Fr. Cristóbal’s visit brought fresh energy to PWPN Indonesia. It reminded us to move beyond promoting prayer and to become a community that lives out a mission of compassion for the world. Ultimately, PWPN Indonesia is a movement of the heart. Encounters like these serve as pathways for hearts to share, inspire, and unite in prayer.   Contributor: Stella Vania and P Antonius Sumarwan, S.J. – PWPN Indonesia
