On 28-29 April 2025, Yayasan Kanisius (a foundation for schools of the Archdiocese of Semarang) celebrated the Feast of its patron saint, Petrus Kanisius, and inaugurated the Eco Learning Camp (ELC) in Ambarawa, Central Java. This event aimed to promote care for the earth and character development in children, involving over 300 students from Kanisius schools of Semarang.
The ELC, situated near SMK SPP Kanisius Ambarawa, serves as an ecological learning space for character building and outdoor activities such as leadership training and spiritual development. It features facilities like joglo, limasan (javanese houses), lodging rooms, educational plants, and camping tents.
Fr. Heru Hendarto, S.J., Chairperson of the Kanisius Foundation, opened the ceremony with Mass, emphasizing the need for the Church to support children’s growth through curriculum and learning facilities. He referenced two important teachings from Pope Francis: Fratelli Tutti, which promotes universal brotherhood, and Laudato Si’, which calls for love of the environment. He stated that the ELC represents a commitment to caring for the earth and future generations.
The ELC aims to be both a learning and reflective space, showcasing plants that nurture human life and serve as symbols of environmental care. Fr. Heru urged everyone to take care of the environment and each other.
Attendees included students, teachers, local officials, and community leaders. The event was enlivened by performances from Kanisius Harjosari Kindergarten and Elementary School children. The two-day gathering, Temu Anak Kanisius, was the first opportunity for students to experience the ELC, focusing on leadership, cooperation, and environmental appreciation through educational activities and games aimed at developing students’ physical, mental, and spiritual abilities.
The ELC aligns with the Kanisius Foundation’s priority to integrate digital communication technology and environmental care into its mission, echoing the principles of Laudato Si’. The Foundation hopes the new facility will benefit everyone in the Kanisius community and beyond.
Additionally, Yayasan Kanisius launched a profile video showcasing its initiatives, created entirely by its resources and accessible on YouTube. With the ELC’s inauguration, the Kanisius Foundation reaffirms its commitment to transformative and ecological education, aiming to inspire a generation that cherishes the earth.
