Rest In Peace Father Franciscus Xaverius Mudji Sutrisno, S.J.

On Sunday, December 28, 2025, at 8:43 p.m., Father Franciscus Xaverius Mudji Sutrisno, S.J., passed away at Carolus Hospital, Jakarta, at the age of 71. He was a member of the Apostolic Community of St. Peter Canisius College in Jakarta. Fr. Mudji is a Jesuit who made significant contributions to higher education, particularly as a lecturer in cultural philosophy in postgraduate programs at several universities, including the Driyarkara School of Philosophy, the University of Indonesia, the State University of Jakarta, and the Surakarta Institute of the Arts. Father Mudji was born in Surakarta on August 12, 1954, and was baptized at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Purbayan.

 

He completed his primary education in Surakarta, followed by junior high and high school at the St. Peter Canisius Seminary, Mertoyudan. He then applied to become a Jesuit and was accepted into the St. Stanislaus Novitiate in Girisonta in 1973. After completing his novitiate formation and making first vows in 1975, Father Mudji continued his studies in philosophy and theology at various institutions, including Driyarkara School of Philosophy, Gregorian Pontifical University, and Wedabhakti Faculty of Theology.
After being ordained a priest on December 30, 1982, Fr. Mudji was assigned to Wonogiri as an associate parish priest before continuing his doctoral studies in philosophy at Gregorian University in Rome. Since 1987, he has taught philosophy at STF Driyarkara and is a cultural figure known for writing numerous books and articles on cultural philosophy. He is also often involved in painting exhibitions and comments on cultural issues in the national media.

 

A requiem mass for Father Mudji will be held on December 29 and 30, 2025, at the Kanisius College Chapel in Jakarta. His body will be transported to Girisonta on the evening of December 30 and buried on December 31, 2025, at the Maria Ratu Damai Cemetery in Girisonta, Central Java. All members of the Province are asked to celebrate the Eucharist for the repose of his soul.
