Father Bernhard Kieser passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at 12:09 p.m. at Panti Rapih Hospital in Yogyakarta at the age of 88. Born in Bruchsal, Germany, on September 28, 1938, to Josef and Maria Jonitz Kieser, he completed his early education, baptism, and confirmation in his hometown.
A dedicated Jesuit missionary, Father Kieser, arrived in Indonesia in 1963 at Stanislaus College, Girisonta. Throughout his lifelong ministry, Yogyakarta remained his primary home and the heart of his work. He made profound contributions to scholastic formation, the social apostolate, and higher education. Notably, he served as a lecturer in moral theology at the Wedabhakti Faculty of Theology and as librarian at St. Ignatius College (Kolsani). Under his expert guidance, the Kolsani library grew into a premier research destination for students and scholars alike.
Formation and Priestly Ordination
Following his graduation from the Gymnasium, Father Kieser entered the Society of Jesus, beginning his novitiate at Neuhausen on April 25, 1957. He professed his first vows on April 27, 1959, and completed three years of philosophical studies at the Munich School of Philosophy (1957–1962).
Driven by a missionary calling to Indonesia, he spent a year (1962–1963) studying Indonesian and Javanese at the St. Stanislaus Novitiate in Girisonta. He deepened his language fluency during his apostolic orientation period (TOK) at Muntilan Parish (1963–1965), followed by four years of theological formation divided between Yogyakarta and Frankfurt (1965–1969).
Father Kieser received tonsure and minor orders from Mgr. J. Neuhausler at Berchmans Kolleg, Munich, on June 17, 1962. Cardinal Darmajuwana ordained him a deacon on May 23, 1968, and Bishop Djajaseputra ordained him a priest in Yogyakarta on July 5, 1968. He completed his tertianship in Pullach under Fr. Karl Fank, SJ, from August 15, 1969, to April 30, 1970. He pronounced his final vows in Yogyakarta on August 15, 1974, received by Father Vitus Seibel, SJ.
Post-tertianship Apostolic Missions
- 1970–1973: Pursued doctoral studies in moral theology in Frankfurt and Innsbruck.
- 1973–2026: Served as Lecturer in Moral Theology at the Wedabhakti Faculty of Theology, Sanata Dharma University.
- 1975–1978: Served as Assistant to the Apostolic Orientation (TOK) Director for Central Java and Yogyakarta.
- 1994–2011: Served as Head Librarian at St. Ignatius College (Kolsani).
- 2000–2003: Appointed Coordinator of the Provindo Peace and Social Justice Commission.
- 2011–2026: Continued his dedication to education as Assistant Librarian at St. Ignatius College.
A Lifelong Service to Compassion
Father Kieser tirelessly devoted his life to serving the poor and marginalized, firmly believing that true discipleship meant embodying the compassion of Christ. He instilled this missionary spirit into the Kolsani scholastics, inspiring them to immerse themselves in the local community and serve Yogyakarta’s vulnerable populations, most notably within the Social Village of Pingit. Through his actions, he bore witness to a profound truth: that faith without works is empty, and that standing with the overlooked is the truest expression of love.
His devotion also extended past the classroom and into prison walls. As a faithful brother, Father Kieser regularly visited inmates to offer them friendship and a message of hope, while warmly inviting fellow brothers to join him in this vital ministry.
Father Kieser has now returned to the embrace of the Lord he faithfully followed. His enduring legacy reminds us of all that truly loving means: being present for those who need it most.
